Ryan is a tight head prop who played for New Zealand Under 20's in the World Championship in 2017 in Georgia alongside Tima Faingaanuku and Will Jordan.

Injury has limited his game time for the Mako since 2017 but in 2020 had a more consistent campaign with 10 appearances. Ryan was with the Chiefs for in the 2018-2020 seasons. A serious early season ankle injury cut Ryan's 2021 appearances to just 2 games. Ryan made 6 appearances for the Mako in 2022.
