Educated at St Kentigern College, Finlay Christie joined Tasman in 2016 after a standout year for UC in the Christchurch metro club comp and started in the 2019 NPC Premiership victory. His debut season earned him a 2017 Chiefs contract. 'Red' signed with the Hurricanes for 2018 & 2019 and then had an outstanding season for the Blues in the 2019 & 2020 Super Rugby Aotearoa competitions.

Subsequently Finlay became All Black # 1196 making his debut against Tonga in July 2021. His selection for the All Blacks squads of 2021 and 2022 precluded him playing any Mako matches in the NPC. He has now played in 21 Test matches.
