Marlborough Boys College still unbeaten

Marlborough Express

Marlborough Boys' College made it five wins from five in the plate section of the Press Cup Crusaders Region secondary schools rugby competition when they beat Shirley Boys' High School 25-12 in Christchurch on Saturday.

The result means MBC are guaranteed a home semifinal, and if they beat Burnside HS in Christchurch next Saturday, they will qualify top.

MBC assistant coach Martyn Vercoe said the performance wasn't one of their best but they were able to tighten things up in the second half and hammer Shirley up front. The driving play from lineouts was particularly effective.

Star of the show was midfielder Adam Smith. The pocket rocket broke the line almost at will and tackled with venom. Halfback Mitchell Rhodes continued his fine season and in the forwards, flanker Tom Looms was a standout.

No8 and captain Kurt Schollum was again a dominant figure in the match, scoring two tries.

Bevan Moody and Jack Roberton scored the others, with Schollum adding a conversion and penalty.

Hooker Billy Collins was selected in the South Island secondary schools training squad. Vercoe said that was a great boost for the team but he was disappointed Schollum didn't make it as well.
