Tasman rugby CEO bowing out

One of the key figures in keeping the Tasman Makos solvent and in top flight rugby is stepping down.

Peter Barr, chief executive of the Tasman Rugby Union, confirmed at the weekend that after 10 years in rugby administration, he will be leaving his post.

"I feel it's time for new challenges," he said.

"It's the right time for someone new to come in with fresh ideas ... take the rugby union to the next stage of development."

Formerly in charge of the Nelson Bays Rugby Union, Barr joined the TRU in early 2008 when it was in dire financial strife.

Since then, the union has been hit by other issues including a fractured relationship between the Nelson and Marlborough sub-unions, and the threat of demotion from the top flight.

"Certainly there have been plenty of challenges, but I'm passionate about rugby and I've enjoyed the challenge of getting the union back on to a sound financial footing, and I've thoroughly enjoyed working with all the stakeholders of the game.

"I think we've certainly mended our relationship with Marlborough, so the time is right for someone else to come in."

The union made a significant net profit in 2009, and a smaller one in 2010, and although a combination of the economic climate and costs associated with hosting Rugby World Cup and four Super Rugby matches this season have meant they are budgeting on making a loss, they had enough cash reserves to see them through.

Barr first indicated to the board in December last year that 2011 was likely to be his last and he had not changed his mind. He did not have another role lined up.TRU chairman Nick Patterson said Barr was a sports administrator of the highest quality and would be sorely missed by the union.

"Peter has done a tremendous job for the Tasman Rugby Union since he came aboard.

"[He's] a very prudent financial manager and controller of the business, and has played no small part in really strengthening the case of the TRU and where it stands today.

"He will be sorely missed, no question about it."

The position would be advertised shortly, and Barr will remain in the job until his successor has been found.
