After 100 + matches for the Southland Stags, you now get to play for the mighty Tasman Makos. Are there any noticeable differences that have taken some getting used to?
It’s the sun and the hard grounds that have taken some getting used to! In all seriousness, it’s been a privilege to be invited into a special group that play such an exciting brand of running rugby – and having fun doing it.

At what age and at what position did you first play rugby?
I started at the age of 5 as a winger. I moved into scrum half at 16.

Who was your biggest influence to become a better rugby player?
My father Paddy as he was the person who transformed me from a wing to a scrum half.

Who has been your biggest influence on life away from the game?
My Granddad, Pat. He’s a top bloke and always up for a yarn about all things life in general.

When did you realise you might be any good at the rugby?
It was when I got my chance to make my provincial debut.

Who in the Makos gives you the biggest grief and why?
It has to be the parrot, Mitchell Scott. He never shuts up if I get a box kick wrong.

Who do you like to give grief to and why?
Marty Banks. Someone has to keep him grounded. He has the chest out at the moment being the leading ITM Cup point scorer.

Name any player in world rugby who you would most like to be like and why?
Julian Savea, the All Black winger. He’s just so big, strong and fast (a bully on the paddock).

What is the one thing that people don’t know about you?
My birth name is not Jimmy. My real names are Quinton James. But you can call me Jimmy.
