Player Profile - Trael Joass
Meet The Makos Newbies
This week we talk to Trael Joass, the Makos new mid-field back from Wanderers Club.
You’re a new Mako. Congratulations. When did you first realise that making the Makos was a possibility?
It was this time last year when I was invited to play in Makos pre-season games. Unfortunately some health issues intervened and prevented me from participating. I’m glad to get a second chance.
At what age, where and at what position did you first play rugby?
I first played in Whangarei at 5 or 6 years old and I was a number 8.
Who was your biggest influence to become a better rugby player?
My family, especially my old man Stacey. He inspired and motivated me to play the game hard and fast.
Who has been your biggest influence on life away from the game?
My family and friends and the community including team mates at Wanderers rugby club. I have had some excellent mentoring about not only the game but life from club leaders Charles Taylor and Frazer Lochhead and from my coaches Johnny Bloxham and Sam Gibbens.
The Makos environment has always been welcoming and good humoured. Is anyone pulling your leg yet?
Marty Banks is always on my case. I have known him since we both represented Buller in the Heartland comp so he’s not shy to have me on.
Who have you buddied up with in the squad?
I’m pretty much a free spirit so I just try to get to know everyone. I know a lot of the guys and am getting to know the newbies.
Is there anyone in the team you look up to or most want to play like?
I look up to Shane Christie, I always have. I relate to him and how he carries himself in general life, he’s a good man. I also admire Tevita Koloamatangi who is quiet yet hard working and always there for you.
What is the one thing that people don’t know about you?
Since I was 16 I have had a heart murmur. This got much worse last season and I had to have a heart operation to fix it. All is sweet now however.
