MEET THE MAKO NEWBIES
This week we talk to Jeff Lepa, the Makos lock from Waimea Old Boys club.
Congratulations on becoming Tasman Mako # 131. Having first made the squad in 2014, you must be pleased to get your first run. Tell us how you have handled the wait.
The key for me has been patience and staying positive. I have spent a lot of time working on the skills the coaches asked me to work on, mainly around kick off receptions and ball security. Staying positive was made possible by my team mates who have always been supportive and encouraged me to keep my head up.
At what age, where and at what position did you first play rugby?
I was a late starter, not playing until I was 14 as a lock for Linwood College 1st XV. Prior to that I played basketball and volleyball. I then went to Christchurch Boys High School on a scholarship in 2009.
Who was your biggest influence to become a better rugby player?
My father Viliamu. He was a rugby player, a back rower, and always had good advice and encouragement.
Who has been your biggest influence on life away from the game?
My mother Pekiga, she always kept me focussed on education and the church. I have a Diploma in Travel & Tourism and am a committed Christian, thanks to my mum.
The Makos environment has always been welcoming. Who are the jokers in the pack?
Without a doubt our hunters and gatherers, Liam Squire & Tim Perry. They love a laugh and find ways to lighten the mood. It’s amazing they still have anything to talk about given they are always on long walks together.
Who have you buddied up with in the squad?
I’m close pals with my WOBbers team mates, Pete Samu and Vils Lolohea. I flatted with Pete last year and Vils this year and they are good guys.
Is there anyone in the team you look up to or most want to play like?
Shane Christie has a great attitude and brings heaps of physicality to a game. Joe Wheeler has some of the best all round ball skills of any lock in NZ rugby.
Name any player in world rugby who you would most like to be like and why?
For me it’s Jerome Kaino for his physicality and dominance on the field, making minimal errors. He’s also a humble Christian guy.
What is the one thing that people don’t know about you?
I’m very musical. I was the drummer in our church band and can also play guitar and piano.
