Meet Tima Faingaanuku
Just last year Tima Faingaanuku was playing at fullback or wing for Nelson College 1st XV. Now he finds himself on the right wing for the Tasman Makos, a fast track by any standards. Big, strong and fast, he showed his ability with a strong finish to score over the top of a couple of defenders against Canterbury.
Last year Tima, represented the Crusaders Knights and Tasman under-18 teams and was selected in this year's Tasman men's sevens squad for the national tournament in Rotorua. He turned heads as part of the Nelson senior club side, scoring 10 tries in his debut premier season at age 19.
Congratulations on becoming Tasman Mako # 138. You come to us being picked first year out of Nelson College. Tell us how you are getting on and what you want to achieve in this Makos campaign?
I think I’m getting on pretty good and really just trying to keep track of everything and take in all the coaching and learnings. My goal is to make the most of my opportunities, play well and secure a starting spot.
At what age, where and at what position did you first play rugby?
I was 11 when I first started, playing at halfback for Pukekohe Rugby Club.
Who has been your biggest influence life away from the game?
My father Tau and my grandpa Lotima.
The Makos environment has always been welcoming. Who is pulling your leg or giving you grief?
I’d have to say Vils Lolohea is on my case because I’ve taken his spot on the right wing. Mind you he gave me a head start having broken his ankle playing for the Sunwolves in Super rugby.
Who have you buddied up with in the squad?
My little mate from Pukekohe, Finlay Christie aka “Red”.
What is the one thing that people don’t know about you?
I’m single and available asap [Hardly surprising for a 19 year old – Ed].
