Tasman v Hawkes Bay review

The Makos showed glimpses of their best form, especially in the first half, in winning their fourth match from six in an entertaining game in Napier on Saturday night.

The forwards and backs interaction was sometimes quite sublime as the Makos ran in five tries. The forwards in particular produced some great go forward with exceptional handling that allowed the Makos ball runners, especially no. 8 Pete Samu, to crash through holes created. The presence of Alex Ainley, after four matches missed with injury, gave the tight five a much more robust presence on the park.

Having cleared the bench early in the second half, some uncertainty in defence allowed the Magpies to run in three tries of their own and gave coach Leon MacDonald some heart palpitations.

It was pleasing though to see the young backs Alex Nankivell and Trael Joass capitalise with poise on yet another bust by Samu to put rookie winger Caleb Makene over for the Makos fifth and what turned out to be match sealing try.

Tasman 36 (Tima Faingaanuku, Pete Samu, Kieron Fonotia, Marty Banks, Caleb Makene tries, Banks pen, 4 con) v Hawke's Bay 29 (Trent Boswell-Wakefield, Tony Lamborn, Jason Long, Jonah Lowe tries, Ihaia West pen, 2 con, Lowe con,) HT: 24-8
