Meet the coaches

Greg Somerville is our Tasman Makos set piece coach. A 66-test All Blacks prop from 2000 until 2008, Greg also has a role as the Tasman Rugby Union’s resource coach.

What is your core role in the Makos coaching set up? 

My role is working with the forwards as a set piece coach for the Makos Mitre 10 cup team and as a set piece resource coach to our TRU development teams and clubs throughout the year.

What most excites you about this Mitre 10 Cup season? 

I am excited by the potential of the group; we have a good number of Super players as well as some exciting up and comers.

Working with the players and developing relationships with them, as well as seeing growth in them as people and their games, is great to be a part of.

What is your background prior to joining TRU? 

I was fortunate enough to spend a number of years playing for a few sides, from NPC teams through to the international level. After rugby, I worked for a while at PGG Wrightson as well as at Rural Fencing. Growing up on a farm I have always had an interest in what goes on in the agriculture industry. Within rugby since my playing days, I have spent a month or so a year in Japan with the Ricoh Club scrum coaching. I have always had a toe in the water and am enjoying being more involved with the Makos.

Tell us a bit about your personal life? 

I have 3 daughters to run around after. I also love getting out on the water fishing and diving or into the hills chasing game (chasing being the optimum word, not always gathering).
