September 27, 2009, will go down in Tasman folklore – the day they defeated Auckland at Nelson. The last time Auckland had lost in Nelson was in 1875. Six victories from the first ten matches was a promising start, but results fell away over the last three matches of the competition. Sadly there was always the suspicion that no matter how well Tasman played there was always the threat of relegation at season’s end. Tasman competed well, and the commitment shown by their players would be welcome in any team.

Robbie Malneek, Tasman’s original fullback, played in every game. He was both dependable and an exciting practitioner of the art. Former Waikato wing James Kamana began like a rocket but saw little game time as the season wore on. Blair Cook was a regular starter on the wing, but appeared more constrained as the season progressed. Given opportunity Afeleki Pelenise always provided a challenge out wide. Lucky Mulipola returned from a year in Dunedin but struggled to find the form of two years ago. He was to represent Samoa at year’s end. Kade Poki was closely marked in midfield.

The standout player for Tasman, and indeed one of the stars of the whole competition, was captain Andrew Goodman. He occupied three backline positions during the season, but we felt was best suited to second five-eight. He finished the season as the first Tasman player to record a century of points in a year, but he offered much more than that – his leadership, his skills with ball in hand, his attack, his defence were all quite remarkable. Matt James, formerly of Manawatu, made most of his appearances from the bench. James Marshall finished the season with his second try against Wellington. Kahn Fortuali’i is a top operator at halfback. His time at first five eight could be described as an experiment.

Two local legends Alex Ainley and Mark Bright were as ever indefatigable. Jonathan Poff had his best season yet on the flank for Tasman. It was well into the season before Glen Gregory got to start as a blindside flanker. He ran well. Joe Wheeler had a very good second season. Injury took All Black Ben Franks from the scene before the season had progressed far, but Tristan Moran stepped up to the occasion. Sakaria Taulafo had a very good season concluding with selection for Samoa. The rising star of the team was New Zealand age grade hooker Quentin MacDonald. He had been mainly used from the bench last year, as he began 2009, however by mind season his form was such that he leapt ahead of the Super 14 experienced Daniel Perrin.
