Tasman was a welcome addition to a steadily expanding competition. The debutants produced a very encouraging result in the opening game, against Waikato, then took a hammering from Otago in the second round. The win in the final game, against Hawke’s Bay, would have installed confidence in the team for 2018. The squad contained several secondary school pupils from Motueka High School, and it could take several years for the Union to develop a squad of seasoned campaigners. However, the relatively new Tasman union has achieved remarkable success in a short time with its Makos and one cannot dismiss the possibility of the women’s team meeting similar success. The team did play attractive running rugby.

While nearly all the squad were new to first-class rugby, centre Wairakau Greig had played three years with Manawatu. Jess Foster captained the team and showed good leadership and form, having played for the Bay of Plenty Volcanix, as a loan player, in 2016. Stars of the team were 17-year-old Risi Pouri-Lane and outside back Jess Drummond, both of whom made trips to Japan and Australia with the national development sevens team. Pori-Lane has already represented NZ at judo and touch and this multi-talented sportswoman, from the very successful Motueka High School svens team, looks to have a Black ferns shirt within her grasp. Rosie Buchanan-Brown showed promise at half-back; she’s another 17-year-old with a bright future in the game.
