Kiwi-born, Tyrel represented the 2014 Australian Schoolboys and Australia U20's in 2015 & 2016. In 2017 he played for the Melbourne Rebels before joining Tasman mid-season 2017. He started in the victorious 2019 Mitre 10 Cup Premiership team but due to All Blacks commitments was restricted to just 3 appearances in 2020. He played for the Highlanders from 2018 and joined the Hurricanes from 2020 season.

Tyrel earned his first Test cap in 2018 against Japan (AB #1180) and also played for the Maori All Blacks in 2018 and 2019. Tyrel's selection in the 2021 All Blacks squads limited his appearances for the Mako to just the one match, and a call up to start for the All Blacks in 2022 brought up his 20th Test Cap.
