Wayne Young has replaced Graeme Taylor as one of two Marlborough Sub-Union delegates on the Tasman Rugby Union board.

Taylor resigned from the position last month, and Young was approached by Marlborough Rugby Sub-Union (MRSU) chairman Dave McCormick and area manager Aaron Senior and asked if he would consider the job.

Young comes with plenty of rugby experience. He's very well respected in rugby and business circles here. He played 48 games for Marlborough at halfback during the early-mid 1990s and in recent years coached the Red Devils as well as coaching the Central premier club team for several seasons.

He considered long and hard before accepting a place on the Tasman board. "I thought about it for a week or so and said I would give it a crack.

"I certainly wouldn't have looked at myself wanting to be a `fish head' 12 months ago. I'm very passionate about Marlborough rugby and also the people involved."

Young said he had no previous experience on rugby boards and had no agenda going into the job and would consult with his fellow Marlborough representative on the Tasman board, Murray Hunt, about what it involves and he intended easing himself into the job."I think Tasman are pretty much on track. I'm not going to change anything. I'm going there obviously to represent Tasman and Marlborough. I think I'm a team player. I'm a communicator and I'm going into the job with an open mind."

While the Tasman alliance has been fraught with strife during its brief seven-year history, Young said one thing he knows is that grassroots rugby people from both sides of the hill all have the game at heart and their clubs and provinces interests and he's no different.

"I think we are all like-minded people, doing what's best for rugby."

MRSU chairman McCormick said he was delighted Young had accepted the invitation to join the Tasman board.

"He's a good Marlborough man. He's played and coached here. He's quite in tune with the rugby people here and a very good businessman. He's got that passion for rugby and not just about Marlborough but for rugby in general.

"He's got all the strings to his bow that we really need."
