CarCo the Mako says
Hi Makos FINatics. How great is it to have the ITM Cup underway and for our Mighty Makos to get a first up, bonus point away win against Waikato?
Now it’s Nelson’s turn to come out and watch the boys play at Trafalgar Park this Friday evening against Bay of Plenty. This will give me an opportunity to show off my new outfit which is pretty neat if I do say so myself.
Then Thursday next week I’ll be heading over to Blenheim as we host Manawatu at Lansdowne Park at 7.35pm.
The match against Waikato had a little bit of everything. It took the boys a bit of time to work out the early season rust and the Mooloos got out to a 9 – 3 lead. Then a bit of Makos magic, with some good lead up forward play, a Billy Guyton flick pass through his legs and a deft lob by Quentin MacDonald put Liam Squire over in the corner for the Makos first try of the season, duly converted from the sideline by Marty Banks. The lead would not be relinquished for the remainder of the match.
A superb rolling maul lead to a converted try for Shane Christie provided for a handy 17 – 9 half-time lead.
The second half began like the first; a bit rusty in places and also some poor discipline that had the Makos conceding 12 penalties by the 50th minute mark. No doubt KK and Leon had a wee talk about that later on.
Pete Samu showed his strength to bust over and Jimmy Cowan secured the bonus point with a last minute try after some strong work up front.
All in all it was a handy start to the campaign. It’s always good to go up to Hamilton and come home with 5 points whilst denying them any.

At the debrief meeting on Monday, skipper Shane Christie was picked by his team mates and coaching staff as our first Makoman, with a one in 12 chance of a trip for 2 to Paris thanks to Mondo Travel & Air France.
So now our attention moves to the first ITM Cup home game at home on Friday night against Bay of Plenty. Gates open at 5pm at not only will I be sporting my new kit, but we will be having an After Work Party with a live band “Repeat Offenders”, lots of food, coffee and beverage stalls, and curtain raiser – The Car Company Nelson Bays U15’s Final between two terrific teams from Nelson College.
The boys will really appreciate you loud and passionate support.

For ITM Cup, even though RWCA Kids 12 Years & Younger are Free they will need to be ticketed with a paying customer (4 kids per adult) so we can keep track of our attendance data and keep everyone safe and accounted for.
