Player Profile - Alex Nankivell

MEET THE MAKOS NEWBIES

This week we talk to Alex Nankivell, the Makos new inside back from Lincoln University, formerly Christchurch Boys High School.

Congratulations on becoming Tasman Mako # 128 and making your debut on Friday night against Waikato. Describe you rugby journey in recent times to becoming a Mako.

I was a member of last year’s Christchurch Boys High School team that won the Press Cup and South Island secondary schools final. My family and I decided to sign with the Tasman Makos after meeting Tony Lewis, KK & Leon in October. This year I played for Lincoln University and we were unbeaten, taking out the Senior Premiers final.

At what age, where and at what position did you first play rugby?

I first played as a centre at age 5 for Christchurch Rugby Football Club. I loved it.

Who was your biggest influence to become a better rugby player?

My father Kim has encouraged and supported me the whole way through to do what I love. I have enjoyed a lot of courses and he helped get me into CBHS.

Who has been your biggest influence on life away from the game?

My mother Fiona has helped keep my mind on study and to work hard so I have a Plan B after rugby.

The Makos environment has always been welcoming. Is anyone pulling your leg yet?

Joey Wheeler is having good fun with my surname which he reckons is long and difficult!

Who have you buddied up with in the squad?

I get on well with David Havili and Monty Ioane. We’re outside backs, we’re young and we’re the good lookers of the team (*smiles*)

Is there anyone in the team you look up to or most want to play like?

I look up to all the senior team members actually. All have succeeded at rugby and are grounded blokes. They have been heroes of mine on TV only recently.

Name any player in world rugby who you would most like to be like and why?

The best player in my position is Ma’a Nonu by a mile. He’s strong, fast, well balanced; he can kick and pass very well. And he has mean dreads.

What is the one thing that people don’t know about you?

I am now the youngest Mako player ever in our 10 seasons of ITM Cup (YOAT)
