Meet Andrew Makalio

Our new hooker, Andrew Makalio, is used to success having been an integral member of the Grammar TEC team that won the Auckland club premier trophy, the Gallaher Shield, last season and being named man of the match.

24 year old Andrew has already become a local favourite for the Makos for his bursts and skills in open play as well as doing the hard work required of the number 2 position.

Congratulations on becoming Tasman Mako # 141. You came to us from Auckland club rugby to play for Harlequins in Blenheim. Tell us what and who brought you to the Tasman Region?

I already knew that Auckland had signed up two hookers so I thought I would make a move and try to make NPC for Tasman. Twisty Moran suggested I come down to Harlequins and, after getting some advice from one of the players who I knew, decided to move.

What do you want to achieve in this Makos campaign?

Winning a championship and improving my game by learning from the Super players and our coaches.

At what age, where and at what position did you first play rugby?

I started playing rugby at the age of 15 at Onehunga High School. I’ve been playing hooker ever since.

Who was your biggest influence to become a better rugby player?

My old man is always pushing me toward my goals and helps me with what I need. So everything I do is for him, family and our Father.

Who has been your biggest influence on life away from the game?

My family. Wherever I go they will always be there. Good or bad, they will be there to support me.

Name any player in world rugby who you would most like to be like and why?

Kevin Mealamu, who is very humble, and Dane Coles who is a skillful player who runs like a back.
