Vale Charles Cowman

Charles T Cowman (aka Charlie) dedicated over 60 years of his life to rugby in our region, culminating with his appointment as a foundation co-Patron of the Tasman Rugby Union in 2005. Sadly Charlie passed away last week in Queensland. The TRU sends our condolences to wife Josie, his family and friends.

Charlie started his administration in 1954 at the old Nelson Rugby Union as the JAB representative. After a couple of years he turned to coaching representative age grade teams venturing on as a very successful Junior rep selector and coach (Senior B level by today’s standards).

In 1969, with the amalgamation of the Nelson Union with the Golden Bay Motueka Union, Charlie became the first Nelson Bays Union senior selector along with Ron Horsley.

Four years later he became a member of the Nelson Bays Executive which was then an elected body. After a few years he became Chairman, then a Life Member and then, finally, Patron of the Nelson Bays Union.

With the formation of the TRU, Charlie was given the honour of being a foundation Life Member and the co-Patron alongside Ewan Robinson of Marlborough.

Rest in Peace Charlie.
